Chris Mannix is one of my all-time favorite written characters (and one of QT's best written, no doubt). I dont think anyone, except Walton Goggins, could have pulled off bringing the character to life so unbelievably well from a bunch of words on paper. The guy just has so much range. He managed to be super raciest, extremely tolerant, dumber than a bag of rocks, smart as shit, really mysterious, funny as hell, even funnier ("What's in the chair???"), and above all else, loyal to the very end.
I just recently read that at the start of filming, Goggins "only had one question for Quentin: 'Is Mannix really the sheriff of Red Rock? Is that a bluff?' And QT's reply was: 'I need you to figure out the answer and never tell me what it is.' That was all I needed to know. And he never asked. He may be the only person to date who hasn't asked me that." Goggins said. Here is the article. He 100% should have been nominated for best supporting actor (and won something) for his portrayal of Sheriff (????) Chris Mannix. 10/10, in my opinion, with one of the best ever character arcs as well.

he’s really not that remarkable of a character and tons of people coulda played him. walton goggins does have a pretty specific je ne sais quoi tho, and does what he can to elevate the role beyond what’s on paper.
Walton Goggins is easily the most underrated actor of all time. Almost unnoticed outside of intellectual film communities like Reddit.
It’s been a long time since I saw Hateful 8 and I really can’t speak on it, but I am a fan of Walton Goggins.
Whenever I see him discussed I can only think: “I’m just asking for an eight ball n 2 million dollas!”
Well, and another line, but that’s a little too NSFW.
Someone pointed out that Mannix saw through every lie presented to us.
He called Warren’s lie about the letter, and intuited Grouch poisoning the coffee. The only lie he fell for was Hicock’s; but only because he had Mobray’s real paperwork.
If we extrapolate Mannix’s talent for seeing through bullshit, Warren was probably lying to General Smithers about his son, and Daisy’s story about the rest of the gang ready to burn down Red Rock was almost certainly a bluff, just like he said.
I remember this being one of my favorite aspects of the movie. It’s open to interpretation as to whether or not you believe his character’s claim to be the sheriff.
Watching QT haters battling WG lovers for who can be the ultimate “average redditor” is what keeps me coming back to this sub
