Misleading headline – Wenders received criticism for saying “We have to stay out of politics” after saying overtly political things in the past when it suited him. The headline makes it sound like the criticism wasn’t about double standards. Shameful reporting.
Edit: on the face of it, I wouldn’t disagree with the sentiment in the headline but I heard what Wenders said, and what he has said in the past, and I feel it’s fair to criticise him for that.

The paragraph on which this quote is taken from: “Artists are free to exercise their right of free speech in whatever way they choose. Artists should not be expected to comment on all broader debates about a festival’s previous or current practices over which they have no control. Nor should they be expected to speak on every political issue raised to them unless they want to.”
It’s a lot less controversial than the headline

I absolutely agree that artists don’t have to give political statements or answer any political question in any kind of way, or at all.
However, both audiences and members of the industry are 100% free to criticize any political position. And what everyone must understand is that dodging politically charged questions is in itself political position as well.

Spineless take, but people will eat it up because they buy into this dumb idea that art can be apolitical
