I’m so embarrassed by this as a Canadian. World Curling just released a statement on the rules that confirmed what he did wasn’t permitted. Although I think we could all tell since he blew up the way he did.. he clearly is used to getting away with it but knows it’s wrong.

I’m gonna need this explained to me as someone who doesn’t watch curling.
I understand and absolutely agree with the drama surrounding the Canadian guy being a dick and needlessly aggressive with his “fuck off”. Although those guys are friends and party together so I think that aspect is a bit overblown. When being accused of cheating during a moment you’ve worked your entire life towards, then I can see where the anger comes from.
But the “cheating” I will need explained. How is it cheating? I looked up the Olympic rules, and it explicitely states that re-touching the disk thingy after releasing it IS allowed, prior to the disk passing the “hog line” (which is apparantly the line in the screenshot everyone is sharing that shows the player touching the disk with his finger PRIOR to it crossing the line). No, it does not specify that this retouching needs to be only on the handle or other rules people on here have been completely fabricating
It isn’t just a grey area or something, but a rule was specifically added to make this re touching of the disk allowed. Likely to avoid dumb penalties or disqualifications for minor technicalities what would have 0 impact over the play or game outcome.
On top of that, the refs didn’t call it out even after review, one of which seemed to have the sole job of staring at that line and making sure nobody touched the disk AFTER it passed the line, so I tend to side with them over reddit.
What is the argument here? The Canadian player was still allowed to be entirely holding and controlling the movement of the entire disk at the point where he touched it… He gained 0 competitive advantage from releasing and brushing it with his finger 0.2 seconds later vs continuing to hold and steer it for that additional 2 seconds.
