I used to think celebs in commercials was for the Super Bowl but now I think it’s cuz it’s an easy way to make a major paycheck. Matthew McConaughey seems to only do commercials these days, shitty AI ones at that. I also think there’s probably something about how movies have changed so much and how tv shows are only like 10 episodes long now, idk. The entire entertainment industry has changed a lot in the last 5-10 years.

she’s right! i’m old enough to remember when some of the best Super Bowl commercials were based on fun concepts that actually related to the product. now it’s just “here’s half the cast of the show you liked in the 90s” and no one watching even remembers what they’re advertising, just which celebs were in it.

I have a hard time suspending disbelief enough to get into a lot of shows and movies. That’s nobody’s fault, it’s just the way my brain works. Actors being in commercials and podcasts and whatnot makes that harder. Certainly they shouldn’t stop making money because of my lack of focus, it’s just that I’m watching a lot of UK crime dramas because the actors are less familiar and it’s easier to get lost. (Now, *really good* acting works on my addled brain—no issues getting into The Diplomat for example. But then again do those actors do any commercials?)

Love her so much but have to admit that Duck Butter scarred me for life

It’s not just Super Bowl commercials anymore. It’s all year long.
The one that grinds my gears is Zoe Saldana for T Mobile. You win an Oscar and then immediately turn around and start shilling phone plans!? Cmon girl. Was it worth it? And Jeff Bridges is in them too. After a long and storied career, you wind it down with shitty “Dude” commercials. Did he blow all his money? It’s crazy.

I remember a time when celebrities were shamed for selling out to corporate sponsors.
That was fun, let’s bring that back.

Give commercials back to the actors with small studio apartments and big dreams!

Seeing big name celebs in mobile game ads is so weird.

Companies are stupid for shelling out huge amounts of advertising budget just to get them in their commercials. I don’t blame a single celebrity for taking a super easy payday tho. If the commercial hits, it can lead to a whole revenue stream that would be relatively simple/low effort.

My take: all actors, no matter how famous, need to stop taking advertising jobs for garbage companies
