I’m very confused and seems to me more like a PR stunt or just a bad reporter.

So…between her and her husband, and the movie that is streaming on Hulu, they can’t afford the mortgage and are in default? Because the article says nothing about defaulting on the mortgage or that she is selling the house to may the mortgage off.

It doesn’t sound like she made a bad film, but just wasn’t able to get it financed or sell it at cost after the fact. And then it seems like all the famous friends and coworkers she’s known didn’t help her market it like she’d hoped.

Guilt-shaming because the audience didn’t make her movie successful seems an odd choice. This is the first I’ve heard of her movie, so perhaps a lack of promotion was a contributing factor. If I was going to put my house on the line, I’d make damn sure there was enough promo money so the film had a fair shot.
