Lord knows I love sanitized hagiography.

Wonder what that third act would have been prior to the allegations and lawsuit.

  2. It seems like the focus is going to be on how controlling and abusive Joe Jackson was, which was already covered in detail in *The Jacksons: An American Dream* (a five-hour long mini-series from the 90’s that was played ad nauseum on VH1). I suppose that any “authorized” movie is going to have to focus on that, because, well, the alternative is to focus on… the other stuff.

I assume they’re not going to cover the allegations or at least not in depth.

How fucked up would it be if they ended this film MJ meeting or talking to a child fan and the movie ends with them walking away together and then in a homage to Thriller MJ just turns and looks at the camera with the yellow eyes and the move just ends on a freeze frame.

Oh my god they made Gary look like the Soviet Union Russia in the winter 😭

But gosh they nailed everyone’s looks here. I hope everyone’s ready for how much of a fool people are going to be in the theater lol

  5. I know this is limited perception based on the trailer, but I can’t help but feel like the magnitude of this movie isn’t big enough for the subject matter, nor the budget feels big enough. Seems like a proper movie-doc based on MJ should be like a 4 hour movie at the least.

… And I’m talking about raw authenticity here with the good and bad. It would easily become a timeless classic. Of course would never happen because of his estate

First 20 seconds of this trailer are awful. Really should’ve opened with the Jackson 5 quick cuts – those were cool.

  7. This looks like a Lifetime production. Most filmmakers today, aside from a select handful, can’t capture older periods accurately to save their lives.

The cinematography looks too polished, the lighting isn’t natural, wigs are at an all time low and people’s faces have changed from two decades ago where you can tell they don’t look like from the period the film/show is set in.

Just a little over a week ago I watched Marty Supreme in theaters and everyone looked like they belonged in the 50’s. I was listening to Josh Safdie talk in a Q&A with Ben Affleck and he said the he personally oversaw the casting of 3800 extras and he exceeded the limit of 70 speaking parts for them, so when he requested one more, the producers told him it couldn’t be done.

The end scene in Japan had a lot of attention to detail and people were selected to look like from that period.

That’s dedication to the craft and creating immersion. This, though, I don’t know what it is, but it looks like it was AI generated for the most part.

  8. Watching this trailer frustrates me because *Rocketman* came out 7 years ago and *Better Man* came out last year proving how you can tell the story of a musician in a manner that’s unique and creative, but everything I’ve seen here suggests that they’re playing it safe like *Bohemian Rhapsody* instead.

  9. Didn’t Jackson have a deeper voice irl? Like he kept it high-pitched for public appearances but there are behind the scenes recordings of him in the studio with a lower register speaking voice (similar to how Gilbert Godfried had a high-pitched persona).

  10. Oh man, I really want this to be good. Coleman is really bringing the head based on this trailer.

  11. Sorry, but this looks like the most generic music biopic you could make. Even the trailer feels like it could have been a ChatGPT piece.
