Context for non-DS9 fans: Nog (big ears guy) is a Ferengi, a mercantilist/capitalist species that prioritises profit as the driving force in one’s life. Like he says, he finds that he’s more inspired to join Starfleet (the scientific/military organisation of the Federation, a post-scarcity, non-capitalist union of species and planets) than chase profit like his father has tried (and failed) to do, and tried to bribe Commander Sisko earlier in the episode to gain an apprenticeship (as is Ferengi custom, which is why Sisko tosses that sack of gold back to Nog).
Commander Sisko’s son, Jake, is best friends with Nog.
