R.L. Stine Says Disney+’s Canceled ‘Goosebumps’ Series was “Pretty Good” but Made the Mistake of Not Being for Kids: “That was a weird series, I thought. It was Goosebumps and not for kids. What was that about?”

Shitty link full of ads but I appreciate the headline having the entire story in it instead of clickbait bullshit so thats good I guess.

Do kids even still care about Goosebumps? I’d imagine adults are the audience these days anyway

The original Goosebumps was pretty scary for kids, even today some of those episodes like “Welcome to Dead House” are still kind of creepy. The low budget factor kind of helps with minimal CGI.

  3. Yea 1st season was… alright.

2nd season with Ross was just crap.

Releasing Halloween type shows at other times of the year probably didnt help. Not watching something that supposed to be scary in December just like im not watching is it cake Christmas in May

  4. Never watched it, but a lot of these remakes are targeted toward millennials. Millennials spend significantly more on entertainment than any other demographic and they are also more likely to fall for nostalgia bait.

  5. Well if i was a kid and a fan of GB when i was a kid, i would probably write it for me and my generation because we grew up with it. I have US in mind so i’m not thinking of kids today, but us kids from yesterday.

    idk

I tried watching it and it wasn’t for adults, either. And I’m a massive Goosebumps fan

  7. Was it really not? I only watched the first episode of the first season and even though the majority of the characters were high school aged, it was definitely “Disney YA” ala Freaky Friday. It was like Freaky Friday 2003.

Now, the Netflix Fear Street stuff is definitely not for kids, but Goosebumps came across as something kids in 2025 would watch, and something I (a 28-30 year old) would not.

  8. They were probably trying to appeal to Stranger Things fans, with the massive succes of season 4, being a more darker fantasy/horror season compared to previous seasons.

Goosebumps is training bra Steven King, and executives never had a childhood so they don’t understand the appeal of kid horror.

While I liked the 2015 movie, that and the Disney+ show did the same thing, had the storylines from the books all take place in the same universe with the same group of people and intertwined it within them.

I feel goosebumps always worked best as each book is it’s own self contained story. Makes it more spooky and gives more time to flesh out the details of each book.

Slappy doesn’t need a backstory so much as he’s just an evil doll that comes to life when a spell is recited out loud.

They could have turned it into an anthology and get recognizable actors for each episode alongside new faces

Yeah, my wife and I loved it, but our kids just ignored it. It wasn’t horror to them, just dull.

It was way too cheesy and not in a fun way, Fear Street however was shockingly great. They should just make another trilogy or turn it into an anthology show.
