In Toy Story (1995) While Buzz watches his commercial, Sid’s dad is only seen for a few seconds/frames but a large picture is painted about Sid’s dad/home life (description in comments)

There is some amazing prop/set design in this scene that really paints a picture about Sid’s dad without him ever speaking a word.

Sid’s dad sits asleep in his recliner chair with empty cans of soda/beer surrounding him. There are books and magazines scattered without shelves all around the room. His TV is most likely from the 50s-60s and has a crescent wrench for a knob and a hanger for an antenna. The guitar, deer head, and duck wallpaper show current or forgotten hobbies. Scud also appears to have a bad relationship with Sid’s father considering Scud scurries away after looking for Buzz but finding out that Buzz may be in this room.

This is a great image of a “masculine” handyman but distant father that most likely struggles with alcoholism of some kind. It was not uncommon for abusive alcoholics to be displayed in media as passed out while watching TV with tons of empty cans around them, showing or displaying not only their addiction but the impact it has on their environment. The lack of shelves or storage signal or show some level of poverty or lack of care from the dad that helps fill out the image of what kind of character he is.

Sid also has MANY locks on his bedroom door that we briefly see but in the scene where he is doing “surgery” on his sister’s toy he does not even lock the door. Implying the locks are not for the sister but most likely for someone else.

For me I think these few frames do a fantastic job of showing a character through their environment.
