“Nate Bargatze says he never planned to donate $250,000 of his own cash to the Boys & Girls Clubs of America after the 2025 Emmys. Speaking on his Nateland podcast this week, the host confirmed that the ongoing bit was intended as a positive thing.”

If that’s the case the guy clearly misread the room as it cast a shadow over the whole ceremony. I really like Nate Bargatze but this is akin to letting the cheeky kid at school be in charge of graduation day and saying “if you take longer than 10 seconds to collect your reward then you get gunged”.
It just didn’t really fit at all, the joke wore thin instantly and only seemed to be for the one kids amusement. And then after it was a bit of a dud the kid goes “I didn’t think they’d actually do it”. Anyone with a brain should have been able to say that there will be times it will come across in poor taste as you will have people who will want to thank people who have passed away or want to actually enjoy this moment that their working life has built up to.
To have it be so prominent in the whole show and then say you didn’t even expect to commit to it seems really really short-sighted and like this whole thing was decided a day before the show. I’m all for taking a bit fun out of the elite but this really wasn’t the way to do it.
I believe it was a well intended if not well thought out bit. Him not thinking it would end with him donating money seems short sighted though
I can see how Nate ran this concept past people and they thought it would be a funny bit, because my first reaction was that it could be a funny bit. But then you see it workshop out, and you realize the first charismatic speaker who grabs the audiences attention is to going to make you look like such a huge jackass.
it was at this point where Nate was probably watching an awards speech and thought, ‘well shit’
So nobody at any point in this process thought to confirm that the charity would actually receive money no matter what? This is real life Scott’s tots.
People are shitting on him for this bit and maybe it was a bit hamfisted and mean. But I don’t understand the sentiment I’ve seen expressed more than a few times that people actually like the speeches at these awards shows. Who are these people and how are their standards so low? I would be okay with the speeches if the speeches were any good. There was a time when public speaking was an art form and performers especially used to commit themselves to doing it well. Now we have a bunch of people who come on stage and rattle off a bunch of names for 2 mins, cry about their spouse and kids, or pretend to be completely “shocked” and “unprepared” to accept the award. Just go up there and give a sincere, well thought out speech and people will let you talk for however long you want. The other stuff is just boring imo. For example, that Adrien Brody speech from last year. What is going on in that guy’s head thinking people want to listen to that rambling nonsense? He tried to give a speech that wasn’t just thanking people or crying about his family but fuck me, he barely made any fucking sense. That man would starve if not for screenwriters coming up with things for him to say.
lmao what an idiot
the whole bit should’ve been “the emmy foundation (or whatever the fuck) has pledged $250,000 to the boys and girls club tonight, under the stipulation that i add a thousand to the pot for every second you go over time” and then you have a counter of how much nate has to pay at the bottom and him getting increasingly unhinged as the show goes on
or don’t do it at all! because it was a terrible bit
Wait, so did the Boys & Girls Club get the money or not?
Holy shit why would you admit that? I enjoy his work, but this makes him look like an ass.
He said CBS asked him for a way to keep the speeches short. How bout cutting the mic and instead of playing soft music they can talk over you blast the old school alarm clock noise throughout the place as security escorts them off the stage. If your guests can’t follow rules then they’re shitty guests. This isn’t difficult.
